When comparing, you'll see the word count, reading minutes, number of text sections, and average sentence length for each book. These metrics give a sense of how dense or expansive a text might be. Keep in mind that these are objective measurements, not evaluations of content.

Compare Books puts two or three titles next to each other so you can see measurable differences before you commit. The tool shows word count, estimated reading time, text sections, sentence flow, chapter rhythm, subjects, and page information when available. These are descriptive metrics relative to this catalog — they are not quality judgments. A longer book is not better or worse; it simply requires a different commitment.

The first runs 100,233 words with 26 sections, averaging about 3,855 words per section. The second is 28,053 words with 26 sections, averaging just under 1,080 words per section. Both have 26 sections, but the reading experience is entirely different: one is a sustained regional survey, the other a series of short vignettes.
Word count and reading time
Word count is the most obvious difference. A 100,000-word book will take roughly 436 minutes to read, based on the catalog's estimate, while a 28,000-word book takes about 122 minutes. That is a difference of over five hours. If you have limited time, the estimated reading minutes give you a concrete sense of the commitment. But word count alone does not tell you how the book is organized. Two books with similar word counts can have very different section structures. The latter allows more natural stopping points.
Section rhythm and sentence flow
Chapter rhythm — low, middle, high — describes how many text sections a book has relative to its length. A high-rhythm book has many sections, making it easy to read in short bursts. Sentence flow is another dimension. Average sentence length can range from 17 words to 38 words in this catalog.
